Green Pin Shackles by Van Beest

Van Beest Green Pin shackles are the standard on offshore platforms, heavy construction sites, and crane blocks across the Gulf Coast, and throughout the world. Holloway Houston is an authorized US distributor of the full Green Pin shackle line, stocking screw pin bow shackles, bolt type anchor shackles, ROV shackles, and specialty subsea hardware at our Houston, TX warehouse.

Green Pin Shackles for Rigging and Lifting

Every Green Pin shackle is hot-forged from high-tensile quenched and tempered alloy steel, individually proof tested at 2x working load limit (WLL), and permanently marked with heat number, WLL, and manufacturer identification for full traceability. Working load limits run from 0.33 tons in the 1/4-inch screw pin chain shackle through 400 tons in the Green Pin Super Shackle line.

Green Pin is the flagship shackle brand of Royal Van Beest, a Dutch manufacturer that has produced forged rigging hardware since 1922. The Green Pin name is recognized worldwide the green paint on the bow shackle body is a field-visible indicator of the product family, and for many riggers it is the first thing they look for when specifying premium shackles.

All Green Pin shackles are manufactured to EN 13889 (Forged Steel Shackles for General Lifting Purposes, Safety) and ASME B30.26 (Rigging Hardware). Select models carry DNV Type Approval, ABS Type Approval, and Lloyd's Register certification for offshore and marine applications.

The product line spans four primary shackle families: screw pin chain shackles, bolt type chain shackles, screw pin bow shackles, and bolt type bow shackles. Within each family, sizes run from 1/4 inch through 3-1/4 inch in the standard range, with super-heavy-duty Green Pin Super Shackles extending the WLL range to 400 tons for crane-hook and heavy-block applications.

Holloway Houston stocks Green Pin shackles across the full size range. Standard inventory ships from Houston. Super Shackle and specialty ROV configurations are available on order.

Types of Green Pin Shackles

Green Pin Screw Pin Chain Shackles (G-4151)

The G-4151 screw pin chain shackle is the workhorse of the Green Pin line. The D-shaped body seats a single sling leg or chain link. The threaded screw pin installs and removes quickly, the right choice for frequently changed rigging configurations where the pin orientation stays consistent and vibration is not a factor. Available from 1/4 inch through 3-1/4 inch with working load limits from 0.33 tons to 25 tons. All models are individually proof tested and marked.

Green Pin Bolt Type Chain Shackles (G-4163)

The G-4163 bolt type chain shackle replaces the screw pin with a bolt, nut, and cotter pin assembly. That triple retention system prevents the pin from backing out under vibration, cyclic loading, or load rotation, conditions where a screw pin is not suitable. Specified for permanent rigging, crane blocks, and offshore applications. Same 1/4 inch through 3-1/4 inch size range, same WLL ratings as the G-4151 at each size.

Green Pin Screw Pin Bow Shackles (P-6033)

The P-6033 screw pin bow shackle has the wide-bodied bow profile that accommodates multi-leg sling connections, two or more sling eyes sitting in the bow without side-by-side crowding. Working load limits run from 0.33 tons (1/4 inch) to 35 tons (3-1/4 inch). The larger bow opening also works for connections with mixed hardware, a shackle receiving both a sling eye and a master link, for example. The green painted bow is the visual signature of this model.

Green Pin Bolt Type Bow Shackles (P-6036)

The P-6036 bolt type bow shackle carries the same capacity ratings as the P-6033 at every size. The difference is pin retention: the bolt-nut-cotter assembly stays put when the load shifts direction, swings, or creates side-loading on the pin. For permanent installation, rigging points on a crane block, a load cell connection, an anchor point that sees sustained cycles, the bolt type is the field standard.

Green Pin ROV Shackles

ROV shackles are designed for subsea deployment and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) manipulation. The shackle body and pin geometry accommodate ROV tooling; the closure system is rated for full ocean depth pressure. DNV Type Approval is standard on these models. Specified by subsea contractors, offshore installation companies, and deepwater mooring operations.

Green Pin Super Shackles

Super Shackles are heavy-duty specialty shackles for crane-hook and large block applications. Working load limits run from 100 tons to 400 tons across the series. The geometry is engineered for the specific fit of crane hook dimensions rather than sling eyes. DNV and ABS type approvals are available. These ship on order from Holloway Houston.

Green Pin Polar Shackles (Low-Temperature Service)

Green Pin Polar shackles are cold-rated shackles designed for low-temperature Arctic, offshore, and cold-climate service. The Polar Heavy Duty Bow Shackle (P-6031) is forged from Grade 8 alloy steel, quenched and tempered, rated for service down to -40°C / -40°F. The standard Polar variant extends to -60°C / -76°F. Hot-dip galvanizing is available on select sizes (notably the 120-ton size of the P-6031); standard sizes carry a painted finish. Applications include offshore mooring, Arctic drilling, and cold-climate construction rigging. Holloway Houston can source Polar Shackles to project specification; contact us for availability and lead times.

Holloway Houston also provides rigging inspection services, qualified inspectors examine shackles, slings, and hardware per ASME B30.26 and OSHA standards. Shackles that have seen heavy use in subsea or high-cycle applications get evaluated against current rejection criteria before the next deployment.

Green Pin Shackle Safety and Awareness

Green Pin shackles are governed by ASME B30.26 (Rigging Hardware) and EN 13889 (Forged Steel Shackles for General Lifting Purposes, Safety). The following awareness points apply to selection, inspection, and use:

  • Every Green Pin shackle is permanently marked with WLL, manufacturer trademark, and heat number per EN 13889 and ASME B30.26. Shackles without legible markings are not suitable for service.
  • Visual inspection before each use is standard practice for load-bearing hardware. Signs of concern include body deformation, cracks, corrosion pitting, elongation of the bow or pin holes, and wear exceeding acceptable limits per the manufacturer's documentation and ASME B30.26.
  • Screw pin shackles are positioned so the pin end bears on the stationary load point, not the moveable load, this prevents the pin from rotating out of the body when load shifts. Where this positioning is not possible, bolt type shackles are the appropriate selection.
  • Side-loading a chain shackle body significantly reduces the WLL. Green Pin anchor (chain) shackles are rated for in-line axial loading. Multi-leg loads go through the bow shackle, which is shaped for angular loading.
  • Welding, reshaping, or heat-treating Green Pin shackles voids the manufacturer rating and removes the traceability documentation that supports certified applications.
  • Green Pin shackles supplied to offshore and subsea specifications include DNV or ABS type approval certificates. Retaining these certificates for the service life of the shackle is standard practice on certified projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

The screw pin version uses a threaded pin that threads into the shackle body, fast to install and remove, suitable for frequently changed rigging. The bolt type replaces the screw pin with a bolt, nut, and cotter pin assembly that prevents the pin from backing out under vibration, cyclic loads, or load rotation. Offshore applications and permanent rigging points typically call for the bolt type.
All standard Green Pin shackles are manufactured and tested to EN 13889 (Forged Steel Shackles for General Lifting Purposes, Safety) and ASME B30.26 (Rigging Hardware). Select models carry DNV Type Approval, ABS Type Approval, and Lloyd's Register certification for offshore and marine applications. ISO 9001:2015 covers the Van Beest manufacturing facility.
Standard Green Pin chain and bow shackles range from 0.33 tons at 1/4 inch through 35 tons at 3-1/4 inch. The Green Pin Super Shackle line extends capacity from 100 tons to 400 tons for crane-hook and heavy-block applications. Holloway Houston stocks the standard range in Houston; Super Shackles ship on order.
The green paint on the bow body is a brand identifier that makes Green Pin shackles immediately recognizable on a job site. It is also useful for visual tracking in multi-leg rigging assemblies where shackles from different runs may be mixed. The paint does not affect the shackle rating or the proof test result.
Select Green Pin models carry DNV Type Approval, ABS Type Approval, and Lloyd's Register certification. Green Pin ROV shackles are designed and tested for subsea deployment. When an offshore project specifies certified hardware, confirm the required certification body and model against the current Van Beest documentation, Holloway Houston can pull those certificates at the time of order.
The shackle WLL needs to cover the load share assigned to that connection point in the rigging plan. For multi-leg assemblies, the bow shackle body accommodates multiple sling eyes; the chain shackle body does not. Shackle sizing for a specific lift is engineering work, Holloway Houston's rigging specialists can review the assembly configuration but final sizing goes through a qualified engineer or lift plan.
