Synthetic Web Slings - Flat Lifting Straps

Web slings are flat, woven synthetic straps engineered specifically for heavy-duty lifting, rigging, and load-securing applications. At Holloway, we don’t just distribute equipment—we build it. We manufacture our nylon and polyester web slings at our Houston facility, which stands as the nation's largest single-location sling shop.

Every Holloway manufactured sling is built to exceed ASME B30.9 and OSHA 1910.184 standards. To ensure 100% traceability and safety, every sling we ship is equipped with a unique serial number, a durable rated capacity tag, and full material documentation. Whether you require a standard 1" eye-and-eye sling for shop utility or a custom 12" 4-ply monster rated for over 90,000 lbs, Holloway produces it in-house with the fastest turnaround in the industry.

Web Sling Types: Eye & Eye vs. Endless

Understanding the geometry of your lift is the first step in selecting the right equipment. Holloway specializes in the two most common industrial configurations:

Eye & Eye Web Slings (Type 3 & Type 4)

Eye-and-eye (EE) slings feature a sewn loop, or "eye," at each end of the strap. These are the versatile workhorses of the rigging world.

  • Flat Eye (Type 3): Both loops lie in the same plane as the sling body. These are ideal for vertical and basket hitches where the sling must wrap smoothly under the load.

  • Twisted Eye (Type 4): The eyes are sewn at a 90-degree angle to the sling body. This allows the eyes to nest more naturally on crane hooks, which reduces wear and makes them the preferred choice for choker hitches.

Endless Web Slings (Type 5)

Also known as grommet slings, the endless web sling consists of a continuous loop of webbing joined by a load-bearing splice. Because there are no fixed eyes, the rigger can rotate the wear points, significantly extending the life of the sling. They are highly economical and can be used in vertical, choker, or basket hitches.

Nylon vs. Polyester Web Slings

While they may look similar, the chemical properties of nylon and polyester behave differently under stress and environmental exposure.

Property Nylon Polyester
Stretch at Capacity 8-10% (High) 3-7% (Low)
Best For Shock loads, alkaline environments Acid environments, low-stretch needs
Chemical Resistance Resists alkalis; NO acids Resists acids, bleach, hydrocarbons
Water Absorption Loses ~15% capacity when wet Maintains full capacity when wet

Choose Nylon for general lifting where you need a "cushion" for shock absorption.

Choose Polyester for marine applications, acidic environments, or when precise load positioning (minimal stretch) is required.

Web Sling Capacity Chart

Capacity is dictated by width, ply count, and the hitch configuration. Below is a reference for our standard 1-ply nylon slings.

Width Vertical Hitch Choker Hitch Basket Hitch (90°)
1" 3,100 lbs 2,500 lbs 6,200 lbs
2" 6,200 lbs 5,000 lbs 12,400 lbs
4" 12,400 lbs 9,900 lbs 24,800 lbs
6" 18,600 lbs 14,900 lbs 37,200 lbs
12" 37,200 lbs 29,800 lbs 74,400 lbs

Pro Tip: For multi-ply slings, multiply the 1-ply rating by the number of plies (e.g., a 4" 2-ply sling has a 24,800 lb vertical capacity).

Web Sling Applications

Because they are lightweight, flexible, and non-marring, our synthetic slings are used in nearly every major sector:

  • Construction: Lifting finished steel, concrete panels, and fragile architectural components.

  • Oil & Gas: Moving valves and pipe in fabrication yards where metal-to-metal contact must be avoided.

  • Manufacturing: Precision movement of heavy machinery and palletized freight.

  • Marine: Polyester slings are used extensively for boat hauling and dockside rigging due to their resistance to saltwater.

Why Buy Web Slings from Holloway?

  • Direct Manufacturer: We are not middlemen. We build our slings in Houston, allowing us to control quality from the first stitch to the final proof test.

  • The Nation's Largest Shop: Our 200,000+ sq. ft. facility ensures we have the raw materials to handle even the largest bulk orders without delay.

  • Custom Fabrication: If you need a specific length or a 4-ply 12-inch wide strap, we can fabricate and ship it within 24–48 hours.

  • Safety Guaranteed: Every Holloway sling is proof-tested and comes with a serial number for lifetime traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A web sling is a flat, woven synthetic strap made from nylon or polyester. It is used to lift and rig loads that might be damaged by chain or wire rope.
Per ASME B30.9, you must check for acid burns, melting, charring, punctures, or broken stitching before every lift. If the red "core yarns" are visible, the sling must be removed from service immediately.
Both nylon and polyester web slings should never be used in environments exceeding 194°F (90°C). For high-heat applications, you should use chain or wire rope.
  • Vertical: A straight lift (100% capacity).

  • Choker: The sling chokes the load (80% capacity).

  • Vertical: A straight lift (100% capacity).

  • Basket: The sling cradles the load (200% capacity at 90 degrees).

Yes. Most of our standard eye-and-eye and endless web slings ship same-day from our Houston warehouse.
