The "eye" of a wire rope assembly is its most vulnerable point. Without proper support, the loop can crush under load, or the wire strands can kink if bent too sharply. Wire Rope Thimbles are the solution. They act as a rigid steel liner inside the eye, maintaining the correct bend radius (D/d Ratio) and shielding the wire strands from abrasive contact with shackles, hooks, or pins.
Holloway Houston stocks a comprehensive inventory of Crosby thimbles, including Heavy-Duty, Solid, and Open Pattern configurations. Unlike light-duty commercial hardware, these thimbles are manufactured from hot-rolled steel and Hot Dip Galvanized to resist corrosion in harsh offshore and industrial environments.
Heavy-Duty Wire Rope Thimbles (G-414) The industry standard for wire rope slings and winch lines. The G-414 offers a thicker steel section and deeper groove than standard "light duty" thimbles, providing superior resistance to deformation under heavy loads.
Solid Wire Rope Thimbles (S-412) Designed for applications where the mating pin size is critical and closely matches the thimble bore. Solid thimbles are cast (ductile iron) or machined, offering a rigid, non-collapsible eye.
Open Pattern Thimbles (G-408) Sometimes you need to install a thimble into a closed fitting (like a master link, eyebolt, or pad eye) where there is no opening to pass a standard thimble through. The G-408 features an "open" design that allows it to be slipped over the connecting hardware before the wire rope is spliced around it.
Why is a thimble mandatory for permanent slings?
We stock thimbles to match every diameter of wire rope in our warehouse.
We are a full-service rigging shop.
A thimble needs a termination to hold it in place. Pair these with Crosby S-505 Swaging Sleeves for a permanent splice, or use Crosby G-450 Wire Rope Clips for a field-installable eye. Connect the finished eye to your load using Crosby G-2130 Shackles or G-320 Sling Hooks.
