Wide Body Shackles

Wide Body Shackles

Wide Body Shackles are engineered specifically for heavy lifting applications involving Synthetic Slings (web slings and round slings) and large-diameter wire rope grommets. Unlike standard anchor shackles, which have a narrower bow that can pinch or bunch synthetic fibers, Wide Body Shackles feature an expanded bow radius. This increased bearing surface improves the D/d Ratio (Diameter of the shackle to diameter of the sling), preventing strength loss in the sling and extending the service life of your rigging gear.

Holloway Houston builds custom slings in-house to your exact specs — any length, WLL, and end fitting combination, with proof testing and cert documentation.

Wide Body Shackles

Holloway Houston stocks a premier inventory of Wide Body and Sling Saver shackles from Crosby and Yoke. From 7-ton utility hardware to massive 1,000+ ton project shackles, every unit is a Bolt Type configuration for maximum security, fully traceable, and compliant with ASME B30.26 .

Shackle Types & Applications

Wide Body Shackles (G-2160)

Designed with a significantly wider bow radius than standard anchor shackles. This provides a minimum 58% increase in sling bearing surface, allowing riggers to utilize the full Working Load Limit (WLL) of high-performance synthetic round slings and wire rope grommets without derating for D/d efficiency.

Sling Saver Shackles (S-252)

Part of the specialized "Sling Saver" family, these shackles feature a wide, flat bearing surface rather than a round bow. This design is purpose-built for Synthetic Web Slings, ensuring 100% face contact to prevent the strap from curling or bunching, which can cut the fibers under load.

Bolt Type Security

All Wide Body shackles in our inventory feature a bolt, nut, and stainless steel cotter pin assembly. This secondary securement is mandatory for the critical, heavy-lift scenarios where these shackles are typically used.

Capacity Range & Sizes

We stock heavy-lift hardware for major industrial projects.

  • Standard Heavy Lift : Sizes from 7 tons to 75 tons for everyday crane operations.
  • Project Cargo : Large-bore shackles exceeding 300 tons to 1,000+ tons for marine construction and module lifting.
  • Pin Sizes : Inventory includes massive pin diameters (up to 24") to match engineered lift plans.

Brands Available

Crosby

Crosby Wide Body shackles are the standard for critical lifts in the US energy and construction sectors.

  • Crosby G-2160 Wide Body : Manufactured from Quenched and Tempered alloy steel. The bow radius is significantly larger than standard models, improving sling efficiency. Available in capacities from 7 metric tons to 1,550 metric tons.
  • Crosby S-252 Bolt Type Sling Saver : Designed to eliminate the "bunching" effect on web slings. The alloy steel construction provides a 5:1 design factor.

Yoke

Yoke Industrial offers high-quality, cost-effective heavy lift solutions.

  • Yoke 8-809 : A forged alloy steel wide body shackle designed to provide the necessary D/d ratio for wire rope and synthetic slings in general construction and towing applications.

Material Grades & Compliance

Safety is paramount in heavy lifting. HHI ensures all wide body hardware meets strict material and performance standards.

  • Alloy Steel : All G-2160 and S-252 models are forged from alloy steel to provide high capacity with a manageable physical weight.
  • Traceability : Full material traceability and proof test certification are standard.

All shackles meet or exceed :

  • ASME B30.26 (Rigging Hardware).
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926.251 (Identification).
  • DNV Type Approval (Select Crosby models).

Holloway Houston Shackle Services

  • Proof Testing : We can proof load heavy-lift wide body shackles on our 3,000-ton test bed to verify integrity before they hit your job site.
  • Engineering Support : Our technical team can help you calculate the D/d Ratio to ensure your shackle and sling combination is safe and compliant.
  • Recertification : Visual inspection and NDT services for project hardware.

Complete Your Lifting Assembly

A Wide Body Shackle is designed to work as a system. Pair these shackles with High-Performance Round Slings or Synthetic Web Slings to get the most out of your lift. For multi-point picks, connect them to Spreader Bars to verticalize the load, or use them as the primary connection point for Wire Rope Grommets.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you couldn't find your answer, please write to us atwirerope@hollowayhouston.com

Wide body shackles use a thicker body and bow than a standard anchor shackle for the same pin size, which increases the bearing surface where slings or fittings ride inside the shackle. That's useful when several legs or a wide synthetic sling share the same connection point.
The nut-and-cotter bolt assembly resists unscrewing from load rotation or vibration, making it a common choice for connections that stay rigged for extended periods rather than a single-shift pick.
Working load limit on the wide body shackle varies by size and pin style, so it's stamped on the shackle body and shown on the tag or certificate rather than as one figure for the category. The rated capacity of the smallest-rated part in the assembled connection is what applies to the whole rig.
Shackle size is generally matched to the rated capacity the connection needs, with pin diameter checked against the eye of the sling or fitting - an undersized pin can work loose against an oversized eye. Inspection programs for wide body shackles typically include a visual check before each use for bending, pin thread wear, cracks, or corrosion, plus a periodic documented inspection at intervals the equipment owner sets. Any deformation in the body or pin is normally treated as a discard signal.
