Container Lifting Hooks

Secure Lifting for Shipping Containers & Connex Boxes

Lifting ISO shipping containers requires precise, positive-locking hardware that fits standard corner castings. Holloway Houston, Inc. (HHI) stocks industrial-grade Container Hooks (also known as Lifting Lugs) engineered to engage ISO 1161 corner fittings safely and efficiently.

Unlike standard eye hooks which can slip or point-load the casting, our container hooks are designed with a specific cam or lug profile that "locks" into the corner casting when under load. Whether you are performing a top-lift with a spreader beam or a bottom-lift with a sling bridle, we have the directional hardware to ensure a level, secure pick.

Technical Guide: Left, Right, and Straight Hooks

Container hooks are directional. They are sold and used in specific sets to ensure the load forces are applied correctly to the casting walls.

1. 45° Angled Hooks (Left & Right Hand) Designed for use with a 4-leg wire rope or chain sling bridle where the sling legs angle inward toward a master link.

  • The Mechanism : The "Left" and "Right" designation refers to the orientation of the hook when facing the container end. They are engineered to pivot and lock at a 45-degree angle, aligning with the sling leg to prevent bending stress.
  • Usage : Must be used in sets of 4 (2 Lefts, 2 Rights) to lift from the bottom corner castings.

Straight Lift Hooks Designed for vertical lifting only.

  • Usage : Typically used with a spreader beam where the drop lines come straight down (90° vertical) to the top or bottom corner castings.
  • Warning : Do not use straight hooks on an angled bridle; the side-loading force can cause the hook to disengage or fail.

Compatibility & Standards

  • ISO 1161 Compliance : Fits standard corner castings on 20ft and 40ft containers.
  • WLL Ratings : Our inventory includes Yoke and Crosby models with Working Load Limits (WLL) up to 28,000 lbs per hook.
  • Material : Forged alloy steel, Quenched and Tempered for maximum ductility and fatigue resistance.

Safety Warning : Container hooks are designed for lifting only. They are not intended for lashing or tie-down applications. Never lift a loaded container unless the hardware is rated for the gross weight and the container structure is sound.

The HHI Advantage: Tested & Traceable

We don't just ship hardware; we verify it.

  • In-House Testing : HHI operates a 3,000-ton test bed to proof-test container lifting assemblies upon request.
  • Availability : Large stock of Yoke and Crosby hooks in Houston, ready for immediate dispatch to ports and job sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you couldn't find your answer, please write to us atwirerope@hollowayhouston.com

Container hooks engage the corner castings on an ISO shipping container so it can be lifted by crane or spreader without slings threaded through the container itself. They're shaped to the corner-casting geometry rather than a generic hook throat.
Container hooks typically use a positive mechanical engagement with the corner casting rather than a spring latch - the connection is designed to lock into the casting's opening, not to be held shut by a keeper the way a sling hook is.
Working load limit on the container hook depends on size, grade, and style, so it's stamped on the hook body and shown on the tag or certificate rather than as one figure for the whole category. Manufacturer documentation for most hook styles also notes that loading off the saddle, rather than centered in the bowl, can reduce rated capacity. Because these are usually part of a four-corner lifting set, the set's rated capacity and each hook's individual rating are two separate figures, both on the manufacturer's documentation.
Inspection programs for container hooks typically look for throat spread versus the manufacturer's original dimension, bending, cracks, corrosion, and a latch that won't close. Most programs pair a quick check before each use with a periodic documented inspection, and any of those signs is normally treated as a discard signal. The casting-engagement feature is checked for wear or deformation specifically, since that's the load path into the container.
