Specialty Rigging Hooks

Handle steel drums, ISO shipping containers, and cylindrical pipes safely with engineered specialty rigging hooks. Holloway Houston supplies purpose-built hardware from Crosby and Yoke. Choose from barrel, sorting, and container hooks featuring Working Load Limits up to 12.5 tons for heavy industrial material handling.

Specialty Rigging Hooks | Barrel, Container & Sorting Hooks

Standard clevis and eye hooks handle general overhead lifting, but moving specialized loads like 55-gallon steel drums or ISO shipping containers requires engineered geometry. Using standard hardware on these loads creates slipping hazards. Specialty Rigging Hooks provide the exact shape, taper, and locking mechanism required to grip unique cargo safely.

Holloway Houston Inc. (HHI) supplies specialized material handling hardware. Featuring industry-standard designs from Crosby and high-capacity options from Yoke, our inventory equips your rigging crew for drum lifting, pipe sorting, and container transport.

The Specialty Hook Ecosystem

1. Barrel Hooks (Crosby S-377)

Lifting heavy steel drums with standard slings poses a significant drop hazard.

  • Mechanism: Features a wide, flat lip designed to grip the chime (rim) of a standard 55-gallon steel drum.
  • Application: Used in pairs on a two-leg chain or wire rope sling. When tension applies, the hooks bite into the rim, allowing operators to lift the drum vertically without crushing the cylindrical sides.
  • Capacity: Rated for 1.5 Tons.

2. Sorting Hooks (Crosby A-378)

Commonly known in the field as Pelican Hooks or Lay-out Hooks.

  • Mechanism: Features a distinctively long, straight, and tapered point.
  • Application: The elongated taper easily inserts into the open ends of pipes, steel cylinders, or wire rope eyes. This design allows operators to sort pipe on a rack or move cylindrical steel stock in a fabrication yard where a standard thick-nosed hook cannot fit.

3. Container Hooks (Yoke 8-067)

Loading and unloading ISO shipping containers requires hardware that interfaces directly with the unit's structural lifting points.

  • Mechanism: Engineered with a specialized lug that slots directly into the ISO corner castings of a shipping container.
  • Application: Used in sets of four on a spreader beam or multi-leg bridle. Specific models are designated as Left, Right, or Straight depending on the lift angle and the specific corner of the container.
  • Capacity: Heavy-duty Yoke container hooks handle 12.5 Tons per hook.

4. Wire Rope Sliding Choker Hooks

  • Mechanism: Features a smooth, oversized eye designed to let a 3/8" to 1/2" wire rope slide through it freely.
  • Application: Used to create a fast choker hitch around bundled lumber, rebar, or pipe. As the crane lifts, the hook slides down the wire rope line, cinching tightly around the cargo to lock the bundle together.

Usage & Application Guidelines

1. Application Matching

Never use a specialty hook for a general lift. A sorting hook lacks the deep bowl required to safely cradle a standard sling or lifting ring. A barrel hook cannot safely lift anything other than a drum rim.

2. Barrel Hook Sling Angles

When lifting drums, riggers must monitor the angle of the sling legs. The legs must maintain a specific angle (typically 30 to 45 degrees off vertical) to keep constant inward pressure so the hooks maintain their grip on the drum chime.

3. Container Casting Engagement

Riggers must verify the container hook is fully inserted and locked into the ISO corner casting before applying tension to the crane line.
