Grab Hooks

When lifting an asymmetrical load, a standard fixed-length chain sling often won't balance properly. You need the ability to adjust the length of individual chain legs on the fly. Grab Hooks provide this capability. Engineered with a narrow, parallel throat, they slide over a specific chain link and lock it in place, allowing you to shorten a sling safely without tying knots or using makeshift hardware.

The Grab Hook Ecosystem

1. Cradle Grab Hooks (The Modern Standard)

When a chain is shortened using a standard grab hook, the link being held can suffer bending stress, often requiring a 20% reduction in the sling's overall WLL.

• The Solution: Cradle Grab Hooks (such as the Crosby A-1348 or Gunnebo GG/OG series) feature specialized support saddles ("cradles") that fully support the engaged chain link.
• The Benefit: This design prevents the link from bending, allowing the chain to retain 100% of its rated Working Load Limit when used as a shortener.

2. Clevis vs. Eye Connections

• Clevis Grab Hooks: Designed to connect directly to the end of a chain leg using a load pin and cotter assembly. This eliminates the need for a separate mechanical connecting link, reducing weight and cost.
• Eye Grab Hooks: Feature a solid welded eye. These are typically used when attaching the grab hook to a master link via a mechanical coupler or when terminating wire rope.

3. Grab Hooks with Latches

Traditionally, grab hooks do not feature safety latches. However, modern safety standards on certain job sites now require positive locking or latched grab hooks to prevent the slack chain from bouncing out of the hook throat.

Safety Rules for Chain Shortening

1. Never Tip Load: The chain must be fully seated in the bowl/cradle of the grab hook. Never load a grab hook on the tip.
2. Match Grades: A Grade 100 chain requires a Grade 100 grab hook. Never downgrade your assembly.
3. Know Your Reductions: If you are not using a cradle-style grab hook, OSHA and ASME B30.9 guidelines generally require you to reduce the chain's WLL by 20% when shortening. Always check the manufacturer's specifications.
