Elite Sales Chain Binders

A chain binder tightens the tie-down and keeps it tight through vibration, road shock, and load shift. Without proper tensioning, chain slack is a securement failure waiting to happen on the highway. Elite Sales lever binders and ratchet binders are rated for Grade 70, 80, and 100 transport chain, covering the chain sizes flatbed and heavy haul operations run day to day.

Chain Binders for Cargo Securement

A chain binder has one job: take the slack out of a tie-down chain and lock the tension in for the haul. Two binder types do this differently, and both have a place on the flatbed.

Lever binders (also called load binders) use a handle that swings over center to apply tension and lock. They're fast to apply and release, which matters when you're making multiple tie-downs on a long load. The tradeoff is handle swing, lever binders need clearance to throw the handle, and the snap-over can release stored energy quickly if the handle isn't seated properly.

Ratchet binders use a ratchet mechanism to build tension incrementally. They apply more controlled tension than a lever binder and hold it without the snap-over risk. The ratchet mechanism takes longer to apply and release, but on longer hauls or high-vibration loads, many operators prefer the ratchet's predictable hold.

Elite Sales manufactures both types, matched to Grade 70, 80, and 100 chain sizes from 5/16 inch through 1/2 inch.

Elite Sales Chain Binder Types

Lever Binders (Load Binders)

Lever binders are sized by chain diameter and working load limit. Elite Sales lever binders cover 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch chain, 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch chain, and 1/2 inch chain configurations. WLL is marked on the binder body per DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 requirements for securing hardware.

Ratchet Binders

Ratchet chain binders apply tension through a two-way ratchet mechanism that allows fine adjustment and holds without a snap-over. Elite Sales ratchet binders cover the same chain size ranges as the lever line. Ratchet binders are the common choice for operators who make long hauls or run loads subject to sustained vibration.

Chain Binder Applications

  • Flatbed and step-deck trucking: Standard Grade 70 chain with lever or ratchet binders for lumber, steel, pipe, and equipment.
  • Heavy haul: Grade 80 and 100 chain with ratchet binders for overweight and overdimensional loads where sustained tension matters.
  • Heavy equipment transport: Lowboy and flatbed transport of excavators, graders, and tracked equipment requires binders matched to chain grade and size.
  • Intermodal and port operations: Container and cargo transfer operations where FMCSA securement requirements apply to the load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chain binders are matched to chain diameter. A 3/8 inch chain takes a 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch binder or a 5/16 to 3/8 inch binder depending on the model range. The binder's WLL is marked on the body and needs to meet or exceed the chain's rated WLL. Holloway Houston's team can confirm the right match for your chain size.
A lever binder applies tension with a handle that swings over center and locks. It's fast to apply but requires clearance for the handle swing. A ratchet binder builds tension incrementally through a ratchet mechanism, allowing finer adjustment and no snap-over. Ratchet binders take longer to apply but hold more predictably on long hauls and high-vibration loads.
DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 requires that tie-down hardware, including binders, carry an aggregate working load limit that meets the cargo securement minimums. Binders need to be rated for the chain size they're used with and marked with their WLL. Elite Sales binders are rated and marked per these requirements.
A lever binder can be used with Grade 100 chain if the binder's WLL matches or exceeds the chain's rated working load limit and the binder is sized for the chain diameter. The chain grade determines capacity; the binder needs to keep up. Holloway Houston can help confirm compatibility.
