AMH Chains

AMH chain is designed for use in hoist load chains and rigging sling fabrication. The AMH chain line covers the alloy grades used in overhead lifting service, the same grades that go into chain slings and overhead hoist assemblies across industrial, manufacturing, and maintenance work.

AMH Lifting Chain for Hoists and Slings

Lifting chain in overhead applications is alloy steel, heat-treated for the strength and ductility required in load-handling service. Chain grade describes the relationship between the chain's minimum breaking force and its nominal size, higher grade numbers indicate higher strength at the same link diameter. ASME B30.9 governs chain sling design and use; ASME B30.16 addresses hoist chain in overhead hoist applications.

AMH produces chain in the grades used for hoist load chain replacement and chain sling fabrication. The alloy grades in the AMH line are the same grades specified for overhead lifting service by ASME and OSHA.

Holloway Houston carries AMH chain by size and can cut chain to length for sling fabrication orders. Contact our rigging specialists for pricing by size and grade.

AMH Chain Grades

Grade 80 Chain

Grade 80 alloy chain is the established standard for overhead lifting in North America. It is heat-treated and marked with the grade designation and manufacturer identification. Chain slings made from Grade 80 chain fall under ASME B30.9 for design, fabrication, and use. Grade 80 chain is the baseline for chain slings in general overhead lifting, manufacturing, and material handling.

Grade 100 Chain

Grade 100 alloy chain carries a higher minimum breaking force per link diameter than Grade 80, giving more working load limit in the same chain size. Grade 100 chain is used when the job calls for higher capacity without increasing chain diameter, common in crane work and heavy rigging where head room or block size constrains the chain gauge. AMH Grade 100 chain is marked per ASME requirements.

Hoist Load Chain

Hoist load chain is the chain that runs through the hoist mechanism and carries the load. It is a wear component with defined inspection criteria under ASME B30.16, link elongation beyond the manufacturer's specification warrants replacement. AMH replacement load chain is available for AMH hoist models.

Chain Standards and Safety Awareness

AMH chains are produced for use in overhead lifting service consistent with ASME B30.9 (chain slings) and ASME B30.16 (hoist load chain). Awareness points for lifting chain in service:

  • Alloy lifting chain is marked with the grade designation (80 or 100) and manufacturer identification. Unmarked chain is not accepted for overhead lifting service.
  • Hoist load chain is subject to the elongation limit specified by the hoist manufacturer. Per ASME B30.16, chain elongated beyond the manufacturer's limit warrants replacement, operating a hoist with worn load chain can cause the chain to skip the pocket wheel.
  • Chain slings fabricated from alloy chain are subject to the inspection requirements of ASME B30.9. Frequent inspection before each use and periodic inspection at defined intervals are part of the standard service practice for chain slings.
  • Chain showing cracked, bent, or twisted links, or links with visible gouges or corrosion pitting deeper than manufacturer tolerances, warrants removal from service.

Holloway Houston offers rigging inspection services, our qualified inspectors examine chain slings and hoist hardware per ASME and OSHA standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

AMH produces chain in Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy grades for overhead lifting service. Grade 80 is the established standard for chain slings and hoist load chain in North America. Grade 100 provides higher working load limit at the same chain diameter, used when higher capacity is needed without increasing chain size.
AMH alloy chain is suitable for chain sling fabrication for slings used in overhead lifting service consistent with ASME B30.9. The chain grade, diameter, and all components, hooks, master links, and connecting links, need to be rated and matched for the intended working load limit.
Hoist load chain is the chain that runs through a chain hoist mechanism and is subject to the hoist manufacturer's specifications for pitch, diameter, and elongation limits. Rigging chain (as used in chain slings) connects the load to the hook or master link. Both are alloy grade chain, but hoist load chain has tighter dimensional tolerances to function correctly in the hoist pocket wheel.
ASME B30.16 specifies frequent inspection (before or during each use) and periodic inspection at defined intervals based on service conditions. Frequent inspection checks for visible damage, elongation, and bent or twisted links. A qualified person performs the periodic inspection, which is more detailed.
