A damaged chain link in a sling assembly puts the whole sling out of service, or it should. Carcano Antonio SpA manufactures chain repair links and connecting links in hot-forged alloy steel to EN 1677 standards, providing grade-matched replacement components for Grade 80 and Grade 100 chain sling assemblies. Using grade-matched repair links is the baseline for restoring a rated assembly after link damage or for joining chain sections during assembly.
Chain repair links replace individual damaged links in a chain sling leg or chain assembly. The repair link is inserted at the location of the removed damage, closing the chain back to a continuous assembly. Connecting links join two chain ends, typically at the transition point between chain sections, or between chain and a fitting that does not accept the chain end directly.
The requirements for repair links are the same as for any load-bearing chain component: the link is grade-matched to the chain it is inserted into and carries the same WLL as the surrounding chain links. A Grade 80 repair link in a Grade 80 sling restores the sling to its original rated configuration. A lower-grade link inserted as a repair creates an unrated assembly.
Carcano chain repair and connecting links are hot-forged alloy steel, quenched and tempered, manufactured to EN 1677-1 and applicable part-specific standards. Grade designation and WLL are stamped on each component for traceability.
ASME B30.9-2018 (Slings) governs chain sling assemblies and their components in North American overhead lifting service, including the requirements for component replacement in repaired assemblies.
Open-shut repair links have a hinged or separable section that opens to insert into the chain, then closes and is locked to restore the chain assembly. The lock mechanism, pin, bolt, or press-fit, is part of the rated closure. Carcano open-shut repair links are grade-stamped and WLL-rated for the chain size they serve.
Hammer-lock links (also called hammered connecting links) use a two-piece body with a separate closing pin that is seated by impact. The pin locks the link closed and is not designed to be removed under load. These are common in chain sling assembly work where a permanent connection is needed between chain sections or between chain and a fitting that does not accept the chain end directly.
Quick-connect links use a captive bolt or threaded closure that can be operated by hand without tools. These are used in applications where the repair link may need to be removed and reinstalled, for instance, in adjustable chain sling assemblies where the configuration changes between lifts. WLL is marked on the link body per EN 1677-1 requirements.
