Carcano Master Links

The master link sits at the top of a chain sling assembly, it is the single point that takes the combined load of all sling legs and hangs from the crane hook. Carcano Antonio SpA manufactures master links in hot-forged alloy steel to EN 1677-4, the European standard specifically covering master links and master link assemblies for chain slings. Grade 80 and Grade 100 options are available, with WLL ratings matched to the sling assembly they top.

About Carcano Master Links

A master link collects the sling legs of a multi-leg chain sling assembly at the top and presents a single load point for the crane hook. In a two-leg or four-leg chain sling, each chain leg terminates into the master link; the combined working load limit of the assembly, accounting for sling angle, passes through that single link.

Because the master link takes the full combined load, its WLL is matched to the rated capacity of the assembled sling, not to individual chain leg capacity. Selecting a master link involves matching WLL to the sling assembly, confirming the link geometry fits the crane hook it will hang from, and verifying the grade designation matches the rest of the assembly.

Carcano master links are manufactured to EN 1677-4 (Master links for chain slings, Grade 8). The standard covers design, mechanical properties, testing, and marking requirements. Master link assemblies, where the master link connects to a sub-link, are also covered. ASME B30.9-2018 (Slings) governs chain sling assemblies in North American overhead lifting service.

Types of Carcano Master Links

Single Oblong Master Links

The single oblong master link is the standard top fitting for chain sling assemblies. The elongated oval shape gives the crane hook room to seat properly and provides sling leg connection points around the lower loop. Carcano single oblong master links are hot-forged alloy steel, WLL-stamped, and grade-marked per EN 1677-4.

Master Link Assemblies (Two-Part)

Master link assemblies pair a master link with a sub-link (also called an intermediate link or coupling link) to allow the crane hook to connect to the master link while the sling legs connect to the sub-link. This geometry keeps the hook in the master link saddle and distributes the sling leg forces around the sub-link. Carcano master link assemblies are grade-matched components, Grade 80 or Grade 100 throughout.

Pear-Shaped Master Links

Pear-shaped master links have a teardrop profile: wider at the bottom (where sling legs attach) and narrower at the top (where the crane hook seats). The shape is particularly suited to cases where the crane hook throat is narrow relative to the sling leg count and spacing. WLL and grade marking per EN 1677-4.

Carcano Master Link Grades and Specifications

Carcano master links are available in Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy steel:

Grade 80 (EN 1677-4):

  • Hot-forged alloy steel, quenched and tempered
  • WLL and grade "8" stamped on each master link
  • Matched to Grade 80 chain sling assemblies
  • EN 818-2 Grade 80 chain is the standard chain pairing

Grade 100 (EN 1677-4):

  • Higher-strength alloy steel, same hot-forge and heat-treat process
  • WLL and grade "10" stamped on each master link
  • Higher WLL at the same nominal link size vs. Grade 80
  • Matched to Grade 100 chain sling assemblies

Master link geometry sizing:

  • Link inside dimensions are matched to the chain leg count and the crane hook size
  • Pear-shaped links suit narrow-throat hooks
  • Oblong links suit standard and wide-throat crane hooks
  • Master link assemblies (two-part) suit applications where hook and sling-leg geometry conflicts without the intermediate link

Carcano Master Link Applications by Industry

  • Oil and Gas: Top-of-assembly master links for multi-leg chain slings used in pipe handling, vessel lifts, and turnaround rigging.
  • Steel Industry: Grade 100 master links for heavy coil and plate lifts where the higher WLL at smaller link size matters.
  • Marine and Shipyard: Master links for chain sling assemblies in vessel maintenance and dry-dock rigging operations.
  • Construction Industry: Multi-leg sling top fittings for structural steel, precast concrete, and equipment lifts.
  • Mining: Master links in chain sling assemblies for ore handling and underground material moves.
  • Heavy Manufacturing: Production-lift chain sling assemblies where master link WLL determines the sling's overall rating.

Master Link Safety and Awareness

Master links are the highest-loaded single component in a multi-leg chain sling assembly. ASME B30.9-2018 (Slings) governs chain sling assemblies and their components in North American overhead lifting service. EN 1677-4 governs master links under the European standard system.

  • Per ASME B30.9-2018, chain sling components are marked with the WLL and manufacturer identification. A master link without legible markings is removed from service.
  • The master link WLL is matched to the full assembled sling rating, not to a single chain leg. Operating a sling at a load that exceeds the master link WLL creates the weak link in the assembly even if the chain legs are rated higher.
  • Pre-use inspection of master links covers the link body for cracks, deformation, or wear; the inner surface where the crane hook seats for abnormal wear or gouging; and the lower loop where chain legs attach for opening or distortion.
  • A master link that has been shock-loaded or visibly deformed warrants removal from service for assessment before the assembly is returned to use.
  • Grade matching throughout the assembly, master link, chain, hooks, and connecting links, is the baseline for a rated sling. Mixing grades creates an assembly that cannot be rated to the higher component grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

A master link collects all the chain sling legs at the top of a multi-leg assembly and presents a single connection point for the crane hook. The master link WLL covers the combined rated capacity of the assembled sling. Single-leg slings may also use a master link or a direct hook connection at the top depending on the assembly design.
EN 1677-4 is the part of the EN 1677 series that specifically covers master links and master link assemblies for chain slings. It sets the design, mechanical testing, and marking requirements for both single oblong master links and two-part master link assemblies. Carcano master links are manufactured to EN 1677-4 and carry the required WLL, grade, and manufacturer markings.
A master link is a single oblong or pear-shaped link that takes the crane hook on top and the sling chain legs below. A master link assembly adds a sub-link (intermediate link) below the master link, the sling legs attach to the sub-link while the crane hook connects to the master link. The two-part geometry resolves cases where hook and sling-leg geometry are incompatible in a single-link configuration.
The master link is WLL-rated to match the assembled sling's rated capacity. A master link rated below the sling assembly capacity becomes the limiting component in the system. For multi-leg slings, the master link WLL accounts for the combined force of all legs at the rated sling angle, ASME B30.9-2018 addresses sling assembly component ratings.
Holloway Houston stocks Carcano master links in Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy steel, in oblong, pear-shaped, and two-part assembly configurations. In-stock items ship from the Houston, Texas warehouse same-day. Call 1-888-496-4700 or visit 5833 Armour Dr. for current availability.
Master link geometry, specifically the inside width and length of the upper loop, is matched to the crane hook size it will hang from. The hook bill and shank width need to clear the inside of the master link and seat in the saddle. Carcano product documentation provides inside dimensions by part number.
