Carcano Hooks

Carcano Antonio SpA has been producing forged chain fittings and hooks out of Valmadrera, Italy for decades. Their hooks are hot-forged, quenched, and tempered in alloy steel, Grade 80 and Grade 100, and manufactured to the EN 1677-2 standard for forged components used in chain sling assemblies. The result is a hook that European riggers and sling manufacturers have specified by name for years.

About Carcano Hooks

Carcano Antonio SpA operates out of Valmadrera, in the Lecco province of northern Italy, the same region that has produced forged steel hardware for European industry for generations. Their hook line covers the components that get assembled into chain slings and used in overhead lifting across oil and gas, steel mills, marine, and construction industry applications worldwide.

Carcano hooks are hot-forged from alloy steel and then quenched and tempered to achieve the mechanical properties required for Grade 80 and Grade 100 ratings. Hot-forging aligns the grain structure of the steel with the load path through the hook, which is why the process is specified for load-bearing components rather than casting or machining from bar stock.

EN 1677-2 covers forged steel components for chain slings, hooks specifically. It sets design, testing, and marking requirements that define what makes a hook suitable for rated lifting service in the European standard system. ASME B30.10-2019 (Hooks) governs hook design, marking, and inspection for North American overhead lifting service.

Types of Carcano Hooks

Sling Hooks

Sling hooks connect to the end of a chain sling leg and carry the load directly. The sling hook body is proportioned to accept the sling chain at the top and present a load-bearing seat at the bottom. Carcano sling hooks are manufactured in Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy steel per EN 1677-2 and are marked with the WLL, manufacturer identification, and grade designation.

Clevis Sling Hooks

Clevis sling hooks add a clevis jaw and bolt connection at the top of the hook body instead of a chain eye. The clevis mounts directly to the master link, swivel, or lower link of a sling assembly. This configuration is common in European sling assemblies where the clevis provides a pinned connection to the fitting above rather than a threaded link interface.

Self-Locking Hooks

Self-locking hooks incorporate a latch mechanism that prevents the load from disengaging the hook seat accidentally. The latch closes automatically when the hook is loaded and requires a deliberate manual action to open. These hooks are specified in applications where load orientation varies during the lift or where the load presentation angle could otherwise allow the hook to disengage.

Grab Hooks

Grab hooks have a narrow throat designed to capture a specific chain link size. They are used to shorten or adjust chain length in a sling assembly by capturing a link mid-chain. Carcano grab hooks are grade-matched to the chain they are paired with, Grade 80 grab hooks for Grade 80 chain, Grade 100 for Grade 100 chain.

Carcano Hook Grades and Specifications

Carcano produces hooks in two alloy steel grades:

Grade 80 (En 1677-2):

  • Heat-treated alloy steel, quenched and tempered
  • Working load limit stamped on each hook body
  • Identified by the grade designation "8" or "80" per EN 1677-2 marking requirements
  • Compatible with Grade 80 chain per EN 818-2

Grade 100 (EN 1677-2):

  • Higher-strength alloy steel, same hot-forge and heat-treat process
  • Higher working load limit at the same nominal size compared to Grade 80
  • Identified by the grade designation "10" or "100" per EN 1677-2 marking requirements
  • Compatible with Grade 100 chain per EN 818-7

Marking on every Carcano hook:

  • WLL in tons
  • Manufacturer identification (Carcano mark)
  • Grade designation (8 or 10)
  • Traceability code linked to production lot

About Carcano Antonio SpA

Carcano Antonio SpA is headquartered in Valmadrera, Lecco, Italy, a manufacturing center with a long tradition in forged metal components for lifting and rigging. The company focuses on chain fittings: hooks, master links, connecting links, and fittings for synthetic slings. Their products are specified in European sling assemblies and exported to North American markets through distributors like Holloway Houston.

All Carcano components are manufactured to the EN 1677 series, which covers forged steel fittings for chain slings across hooks, oblong links, master links, clevis links, and connecting links. This standard is the European counterpart to the ASME B30.9-2018 sling hardware requirements used in North American markets.

Holloway Houston is the authorized North American distributor for Carcano products.

Carcano Hook Applications by Industry

  • Oil and Gas: Sling assemblies for turnaround work, pipe handling, and vessel rigging in refineries and offshore platforms.
  • Steel Industry: Chain sling terminations for coil, plate, and structural steel lifts where Grade 100 WLL reduces sling leg count.
  • Marine and Shipyard: Hook-and-chain assemblies in marine maintenance and vessel construction rigging.
  • Construction Industry: Multi-leg sling rigging for precast concrete, structural steel, and equipment lifts on jobsites.
  • Heavy Manufacturing: Production lifting in fabrication and assembly facilities where chain slings see repetitive daily service.
  • Mining: Hook components in mine hoisting and material handling applications where alloy grade and proof-test documentation matter.

Hook Safety and Awareness

Carcano hooks for North American use fall under ASME B30.10-2019 (Hooks), which covers hook design, marking, and inspection. EN 1677-2 governs the same components in the European standard system.

  • Per ASME B30.10-2019, hooks are marked with the working load limit and the manufacturer's name or mark. A hook without legible markings is not suitable for rated lifting service.
  • Pre-use visual inspection of hooks covers the hook body for cracks, deformation, or corrosion; the latch for full engagement; and the throat opening for any measurable increase beyond the manufacturer's wear limit.
  • The hook WLL applies to in-line loading through the saddle of the hook. Tip loading, where the load contacts only the tip of the hook, is not rated service and warrants removal from the lift.
  • A hook that has been shock-loaded warrants removal from service and assessment before further use, per ASME B30.10-2019 inspection guidance.
  • Grade matching matters: Carcano Grade 80 hooks are paired with Grade 80 chain; Grade 100 hooks with Grade 100 chain. Mixing grades in an assembly creates an unrated configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

EN 1677-2 is the European standard covering forged steel components for chain slings, specifically hooks. It sets design, mechanical testing, and marking requirements that define whether a hook is rated for overhead lifting service in the EN system. Carcano hooks manufactured to EN 1677-2 carry the WLL, grade, and manufacturer mark required by the standard.
Grade 100 hooks are manufactured from higher-strength alloy steel, which means a Grade 100 hook at a given body size carries a higher WLL than the equivalent Grade 80 hook. The heat-treat process, quenching and tempering, is the same for both grades. Grade 100 hardware reduces the number of sling legs needed at a given load weight where the Grade 80 WLL would otherwise fall short.
Carcano hooks manufactured to EN 1677-2 are matched to EN 818 chain grades. For North American chain assemblies governed by ASME B30.9-2018, compatibility with specific chain grades is determined by the chain manufacturer's documentation and the sling assembler's specifications.
ASME B30.10-2019 (Hooks) covers design, marking, and inspection for hooks in North American overhead lifting service. OSHA 1910.184 references hooks as load-handling equipment in general industry rigging. ASME B30.9-2018 addresses hooks as components in sling assemblies where the hook is part of a rated sling configuration.
